Build Your Brand with Illinimedia

print

Advertising in print gives you room to really talk to your audience. You can make an attention getting splash with a full-page ad or with color. You can build frequency with a smaller ad repeated throughout the week. Target your message by choosing to talk to readers interested in sports, entertainment, technology or even those that like to do the Sudoku puzzle during class. As a client, you have a lot of options in print.

The Daily Illini

The Daily Illini has been a University of Illinois campus staple since 1871. Students, faculty, and staff find the paper in campus buildings, at bus stops, and in their Greek house. The Daily Illini’s circulation is 16,000 in the spring and fall (10,000 in the summer) at over 300 distribution points around the campus and community. The Daily Illini also produces special sections revolving around the campus calendar. You’ll find publications built to help you narrow in on your target audience with Touchdown Times, Moms and Dads Weekend publications, Career Guide, Dining Guide, and more. The way the contracts work, you are making an agreement to us that you'll be running a certain number of column inches of ads in a year. In return for that agreement, we give you a discount on what those ads cost. If for some reason you aren't able to run as often and don't fulfill your contract, you'll be asked to pay a short-rate. This is not a penalty for not reaching your contract level. A short-rate is recomputing the cost of your advertising at the rate that you achieved. The same can happen if you run so much that you reach the next contract level (everyone like this one). You'll then be given a long-rate. A long-rate is also recomputing the cost of your advertising at the rate that you achieved and can result in a refund.

How do I decide which contract level I want to be at?

It's best to really try to make a good estimate of how often you plan to run. Your advertising representative can take a look at the print calendar with you and make suggestions on special sections and times of year that fit your needs. Signing the contract does not lock you in to running particular dates or sizes. You don't have to run the same ad. Some of the larger discounts are achieved by advertisers who run frequently.

Is Buzz part of The Daily Illini?

Buzz, our alternative weekly tabloid, is produced by a different set of writers and artists than the Daily Illini. There are 8,000 copies distributed in stand-alone racks at businesses and buildings throughout Champaign and Urbana. In addition, 17,000 copies are distributed as an insert in the DI when school is in session.

Can my ad run in color?

Color is available in all of the print products. Color can definitely make your ad pop out from the newsprint page and looks great on the glossy Technograph pages. Color and placement cannot both be guaranteed. For example, if running a color ad, you may not be able to guarantee a premium placement spot. We try to honor all requests. It's best for everyone that you're ad runs where you think is best.

Can I be sure what page my ad will be on?

You can tell your Ad Representative if you'd like special placement for your ad. They can make a request for you to be on a particular page, on a right hand page, on a sports page, etc. These requests are honored whenever possible but are not a guarantee of placement.

Some pages are designated as Premium Placement spots and can be guaranteed. To reserve these spaces, check with your Ad Representative for availability. Many of these spaces have limitations on the shapes and sizes of ads that fit. Premium Placement spots will be charged an additional 20% of the ad's cost.

Explain a column inch.

We measure ads in The Daily Illini by the column inch. This is like measuring a room for carpet. Carpet is sold by the square foot, or feet wide x feet long. Ad space is measured the same way, with columns wide x inches long. Refer to the rate card for the exact dimensions of each column taking the space between columns into consideration.
